The Shangri La Country Club revival continues. Work slowed on the 13,000 square feet club house for a few weeks while a roof truss problem was worked out with the supplier. Things are now moving forward again. It did not slow down during the truss problem as rock layers have 90% of the rock work done on the exterior of the building.

Work on the Gold Course 9 holes has also begun. This morning 2 bulldozers and 2 scrapers were hard at work clearing the view from the clubhouse to the lake. They are also building a series of ponds in this view area which will join the west 9 hole golf course and also be a part of the future condo development. A few large trees had to be removed for the changes in the golf course and workers were also cutting them up this morning.

The Shangri La has long been an economic engine for all of Grand Lake and for certain Monkey Island on Grand Lake. The Shangri La Estates have seen renewed interest in condos for sale and now have very few active listings. The Chateaus also are starting to see interest in the few high end homes available for sale here, with one going under contract last week. Also very close to the Shangri La are The Villas, Pointe Marin, Shangri La Place, St Andrews, and Country Estates. Just in from CNBC web site, New Home Sales Surge in June with Inventory at 42 Year Low!!! This is per new government data over the country as a whole just released July 26, 2010. May was a record low after the tax credits for homes expired and no one expected June sales to come roaring back.

On Grand Lake in NE Oklahoma we have not seen the June surge but we can say the quality and choice of inventory available for sale in many price ranges are getting less plentiful. The Shangri La Resort last known as The Peninsula on Monkey Island at Grand Lake has a new owner and new very viable plans to restore the resort to a great attraction once again. This time the economics will not permit a new hotel but a new club house with dining room, fittness area, and social area will be built and the course will be restored to A-1 condition. Work is scheduled to start soon. There is also a narrow window to join or rejoin the Club without an entrance fee.  Monkey Island and all of the Grand Lake area residents are extremely grateful for Mr. Eddie Gibbs taking the helm of this fine Club. Mr. Gibbs almost had it bought once before but a last minute contract hangup stopped the sale. This time the ownership has passed to Mr. Gibbs.

Dale Forrest with United Golf Unlimited, a club member, and lake resident will be in charge of course improvements. Joe Wilkenson will be the Architect in charge of designing the new clubhouse. They hope to use native rock from the old hotel in the new building to make it feel like an old friend. Mike Long of Mike Long Construction will build the clubhouse.

A meeting has been set for Friday March 19 at 6:00 pm at the Top of the Towers for club members, former members, and others interested in joining. Plans, cost of membership, and details for the club will be talked about at the meeting. For a short window of time, memberships will be available with “no initiation fee”.
