News story in June 24, 2009 on home prices was interesting today. Listed in the top 13 housing markets for performance and price appreciation are No. 6 Wichita, KS, No 9 OK City, OK, and No. 11Tulsa, OK. The report did not take in smaller markets such as Grand Lake and the Grove, OK area. However buyers of lake property come from all over but the top 4 areas are Tulsa, OK City, Wichita, and Kansas City. All these markets but Kansas City are in the top performers nation wide. The prediction is based upon, according to the article, a number of factors including home price behavior over last year, income and employment in the areas. The midwest has fared much better than the rest of the nation in the current recession.

It sometimes can be said we cannot go back but maybe this is not as it appears. Last night we went to a concert in Harlingen, Texas by a country music group, The Plummer Family. We are on vacation in South Padre Island, Texas and I ran across an ad for the The Plummer Family concert. Back in the early 1980′s our local Lions Club in Welch, Oklahoma where we formerly lived sponsored The Plummers each winter for a concert. The Plummers then had a theater in Branson, Missouri where they performed except during the winter months. Anyway, I had lost track of The Plummer Family and had not heard them since about 1985. It was just like time had stood still seeing them again. The concert held at a local Winter Texan RV Park was in a building surprising similiar to the community building back in Welch. Yes, the Plummers were older and grayer but the group was still good and had been updated with a 20 something grandson who is a good singer.

This blast to past made me think of how many families used to have the family lake home at Grand Lake and everyone would gather for family retreats from where ever they resided. They would stop time and enjoy family and friends. Many people never lost track of this jewel, Grand Lake in Northeast Oklahoma, and own waterfront homes, golf course homes, or maybe a lakeview home in a gated community. Our attitude affects the economy in general and also affects Grand Lake real estate sales in Northeast Oklahoma. I listen to CNBC quite abit. Several times recently I have heard on air personality, Larry Kudlow, remark how the economy in most areas is not as bad as it seems. He is very optimistic, a trait I like in people. He talks about how it is ok to spend money prudently if you own economic house is in order. He feels that while we have several in our country hurting economically, we have many more doing all right. Gasoline prices are down reducing the cost to fill the fuel tank in the family car but also reducing cost for many things including food, airline tickets, and anything requiring freight to get to consumer. We can help the economy by spending prudently and not just sitting in the corner waiting for the sky to fall in.

Yesterday, I read my weekly commentary from  Tulsa, Oklahomas own Jim Whitt, a well known motivational speaker. Jim commented on seeing full parking lots at the local casinos and wondered how if your economic state was so bad would you be at the casino throwing money away. He also talked about how we can help the economy by spending normally and not looking at the dark side of everything.

I used to be in the cattle feeding business, an industry that has always suffered many ups and downs in price of our fed cattle but also deals with many adverse weather patterns from mud, severe cold or heat, or ice storms. I painted my feed mill, cattle pens, feed trucks, and over the road semi trucks bright yellow. I always could look out my window no matter the markets or the weather and have a bright day. Maybe we should all take this example and do something to brighten our day no matter how the economy or weather looks. We can feel for our neighbor in need and give to charities who help these folks but if your economic house is in order you can help the country now by enjoying life and buying what you can afford to enjoy life now.
