Today, many extended families are scattered all across the country. Most still like to gather for holidays and special occassions. We find quite often that someone in the family owns a retreat at Grand Lake in NE Oklahoma. Oklahoma is centrally located and Grand Lake is a short 70 minute drive to Tulsa, OK airport or about the same distance to NW Arkansas Regional Airport. Joplin, Missouri’s airport is also only an hour away. Interstate 44 offers 4 exits to the Grand Lake area, all a short 15 minute or so drive from the intrastate highway. It is just an easy place for everyone to get to for a family gathering.

There is always something to do to keep all generations entertained at Grand Lake. I live in the Chateaus on Monkey Island at Grand Lake. My next door neighbors have owned a lake home at least 35 years. They are now in early 90’s and late 80’s but both husband and wife are in good health. They use their lake home many weekends during the year but it is also their family gathering place. This Fourth of July week 2009, they have had 16 guests spanning four generations. One son lives in the Pacific NW and another in Houston, TX. They have grown kids living in other states. They all love to come to the Grandparents or Mom & Dad’s. They golf,  swim in the lake, enjoy dining together, catching up on all that is going on in each others lives, and just relaxing. It is truly the family vacation spot. I thought is was just terrific when I saw my 91 year old neighbor had traded in the old golf cart for a shiney new red one before the family arrived last week.

The lake lifestyle must help one keep their zest for life and youth if you would look at our neighbors. It just does not get any better to enjoy family, friends, and neighbors on Grand Lake.
