Grand Lake in NE OK
Saturday, July 7th, 2007Southeast Kansas recently suffered from rainfall up to a foot in areas. This water all follows the Neosho River to Northeast Oklahoma. Miami, a small city on the river has been hit hard by floodwaters, the second worst flood only to the 1951 flood. The area also experienced a flood of just slight less magnitude in 1986. The waters of the Neosho River finally drain into Grand Lake. The lake is currently at 754.25′ elevation. At 755′ water goes over the dam. Grand Lake is operated by the Grand River Dam Authority. Authority rules do not allow building below the 757′ mark. With today’s lake level you can easily see why the GRDA requires building above the 757′ mark.
If you are currently thinking of buying lake property on Grand Lake, now is a great time to view properties. You will see the lake at it’s worst but more importantly you will see how close the water is to prospective homes or property you are considering. This high level does not happen often and it may be twenty years before we see it again, but the peace of mind in knowing you have seen the lake at it’s highest levels and just where this high water mark is on the property you may want to buy can give you peace of mind for years to come.
